Couples who embark on business together give a new meaning to the word “partnership”. But couples entering the business world are not all successful, judging by the example of some celebrities. For every successful business, there is a company, linked to famous names, either bankrupt or bankrupt. We have compiled seven companies owned by celebrity couples – four have met with success and three others have not been so lucky.

Business is on the Lee family: Spike Lee has been making films for over 35 years and his wife Tonya Lewis Lee has been producing television shows and movies for about 20 years.

The couple met in 1992 and married a year later. They have collaborated on a number of entertainment industry projects such as Tonya Lewis' “Miracle Boys” series, in which Spike Lee has directed several episodes. Together, they also worked on a Netflix series inspired by Spike Lee's “She's Gotta Have It.”

Over the years, Spike Lee and his wife have turned to a more little ones with writing children's books. The first book, “Please, Baby, Please”, tells the story of a parent who begs his child to behave properly. The book sold so well that a sequel was published under the name “Please, Puppy, Please” (in French). A third book, written by Tonya Lewis and her husband, is due out this fall with the title “Giant Steps To Change The World” (which could be translated into French as “Giant Steps to Change the World”).

Since then, the BNA Foundation has been renamed “Thorn: Digital Children's Defenders”. Despite the fact that Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore separated in 2013, the organization is still active and is currently working with search engines and Internet service providers to create a database that will track and target the sources of images of children who are victims of violence and abuse.

Become famous through their television show “Fixer Upper”, in which they restore houses, Chip and Joanna Gaines put their love of sustainable development and restorative skills to the service of their community.

Before founding a family and gaining celebrity status, the couple owned a store in Waco, Texas called Magnolia Market. The latter offered household items and country chic products. However, after the birth of their second child, the couple closed shop and focused on their own home for a while.

After spending some time focusing on the Magnolia house, Chip and Joanna Gaines been able to reopen Magnolia Market and begin to grow. Subsequently, they bought Les Silos, a landmark in their hometown, which they renovated to launch their new business. It was in 2015 that the complex opened its doors. It covers two blocks and houses several retail stores, including a food truck space, a garden shop, a bakery and a lawn area. The first year after its opening, the complex welcomed nearly 2 million visitors.

Bill Rancic worked on the development of the Trump Tower in Chicago. And later, he used his real estate experience to build and sell houses all over Chicago.

The businessman married Giuliana Rancic, host on the channel “E! News “, which has itself launched several successful companies including a clothing line and a wine label.

Together, the couple has been successful in other sectors, particularly in restaurants. They own a chain of Italian restaurants called RPM Italian, located in Chicago and Washington. The success of their establishments allowed them to open another restaurant in Chicago, called RPM Steak.

Their restaurants are frequented by celebrities such as former US President Barack Obama. A fourth facility, RPM on the water, is scheduled to open this fall in Chicago.

At first, Jay-Z and Beyoncé were successful with Tidal. But now the streaming music service navigates in troubled waters.

It was in 2014, in Norway, that Tidal was originally launched but Jay-Z has bought back six months after its launch. The rapper announced the release of his Tidal at a press conference, accompanied by 16 artists who were stakeholders of the company and among them was his wife, Beyoncé.

The streaming platform has won 100,000 users after this press conference. It is available in 53 countries and today has more than 3 million subscribers, which sounds like a resounding success.

However, since its launch, the service has been critically criticized. USA Today has published an article explaining “the three reasons why Tidal was stupid”. Thus, the article described the price of the subscription (at $ 20 a month) as daring, because it is mainly based on the willingness of subscribers to pay for better sound quality – most fans have admitted not to collect it.

Moreover, what is even more worrying are the questions about Tidal's figures. The Norwegian newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv reported in May 2018 that Tidal had artificially inflated by 300 million the ratings of Kanye West's “The Life of Pablo” and Beyoncé's “Limonade”. Following these revelations, the Norwegian authorities decided to open an investigation for alleged fraud at the hearing, and other investigations claim that the number of subscribers at the time of the redemption by Jay-Z was “well below 540 000 announced “.

Since then, Kanye West has withdrawn from Tidal and claims 3 million dollars (2.67 million euros) to the platform. The company is now under investigation by the Norwegian police and a Danish audit of its data.

In the 90s in the United States, it was difficult to walk in the street without falling on a theme restaurant. Even Steven Spielberg has embarked on the adventure with Dive! (Plunge !, in French), a sea-themed sandwich restaurant.

With the unprecedented success of the Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood owners have attempted to copy this model to enjoy Hollywood and the rise of Hollywood blockbusters. While the biggest names in the chain were Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, a couple of Hollywood stars at the time, also provided financial support for the deal by becoming minority shareholders. The group of actors and actresses has sometimes appeared in the restaurants of the franchises to attract attention.

For several years, Planet Hollywood flourished reaching its peak at the end of the 90s with 87 sites in worldwide. When the company went public in 1996, its value doubled from the first day. Following this success, the promoters tried to open a hotel in Times Square in 1997 and launched a chain of ice cream shops called Cool Planet Cafe. The company has even opened a chain of Marvel Comics-themed restaurants.

But between the exhaustion of resources because of the incessant diversification and the rise of various competitors, Planet Hollywood began to suffer. The company, whose value reached up to $ 3.5 billion (3.1 billion euros), ended up with hundreds of millions of dollars of debt for several years in a row during the new millennium. In 2002, the company went bankrupt twice and famous investors withdrew. Six restaurants under the Planet Hollywood brand are still active today.

Finally, actress Debi Mazar and famed chef Gabriele Corcos opened a restaurant in Brooklyn that failed three years after it opened.

A brutal fall. For the actress Debi Mazar and the chef Gabriele Corcos, the road was long and winding until they finally knew the failure.

Yet, the Boston Globe nicknamed the couple “the first family of the Cooking Channel television channel “. Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos created a successful video blog, Under the Tuscan Gun, which led them to win a show called “Extra Virgin” on Cooking Channel.

However, experience does not always translate into obvious success. In 2015, the couple opened a restaurant called Tuscan Gun Officine Alimentari in their neighborhood of Brooklyn. The restaurant tried to play on several tables, being a coffee during the day and a Tuscan bistro at night. In addition, the restaurant hosted paid events with a fixed price menu.

But the restaurant failed to find its audience, perhaps because of an identity or an offer not clear enough. The facility closed just three years after it opened.
